Best backtesting software for beginners
Beginners can start with a free platform tier, a free replay tool or a done-for-you service, depending on whether they code, practise or hand it off.
Updated
Start from what you want to do
There is no single answer, because beginners want different things. Some want to learn to code a strategy. Some want to practise reading a chart. Some want their rules tested and do not want to build a tool.
So the tools below are grouped by the job. There are no star ratings and no scoring of the tools. Facts about other tools were read from vendor pages in October 2026, so check the vendor for anything current.
- Platform strategy tester
- A charting platform with a built-in tool that runs a coded strategy over history.
- Replay tool
- A tool that shows past data one bar at a time so you can practise decisions.
- Done-for-you
- A service that runs your rules for you and sends the results back.
Four kinds of tool
Each kind answers a different question.
- Platform strategy testers, such as TradingView’s Strategy Tester and NinjaTrader’s Strategy Analyzer. You write the strategy as a script and the platform runs it.
- Replay tools, such as FX Replay, TradingView’s Bar Replay and our free Trade Lab. You step through history and decide as you go.
- Code libraries. You write the whole test yourself, and you source the data and set the fills and costs.
- Done-for-you services, such as ours. You describe the rules and get the trades back.
| Tool | Type | Free option | Futures data | Code needed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TradingView | Platform with Strategy Tester and Bar Replay | Basic plan at $0 | CME data is added separately and needs a paid plan or a trial | A strategy script for the Strategy Tester |
| NinjaTrader | Platform with Strategy Analyzer | Free plan; backtesting and simulation are free to use | You need historical data; check the vendor | A NinjaScript strategy |
| FX Replay | Replay and journal | Free plan with 2 backtesting sessions and 1 indicator | Futures and CME data is listed on the Pro plan only | No, you step through bars by hand |
| CE Market Solutions Trade Lab | Free replay and paper trading | Free with an account and a verified email | NQ, ES and GC, 1-minute bars | No |
| CE Market Solutions backtest | Done-for-you | $19 a version | CME futures data from Databento. NQ and ES from June 2, 2016 | No, you describe the rules in plain language |
What a beginner should check in any tool
Whatever you choose, ask the same questions. Which bar size does it use? How does it fill an order? What happens at a contract roll? Are commission and slippage included, and can you change them?
These are the places a result goes wrong without anyone noticing. Our explainers on data, costs and common mistakes go through each.
Then check the limits of the free option you are looking at. NinjaTrader says backtesting is free to use, but the Strategy Analyzer needs a coded strategy and historical data. TradingView’s free Basic plan adds CME data separately, and Deep Backtesting needs a Premium or higher plan. FX Replay’s free plan shows 2 backtesting sessions and 1 indicator, and lists futures and CME data on its Pro plan only.
None of those limits is a flaw. They are the price of free. Knowing them up front saves a beginner from learning them halfway through a test.
Pick the tool by the job: write code, practise by hand, or hand the rules to someone else.
What ours does not do
We test CME futures only: ES, MES, NQ, MNQ and gold (GC). We do not offer live trading or a platform. A version takes two to three business days. We do not tell you whether a strategy is worth trading.
If you want to learn to code, a platform tester is the better route for that goal. If you want rules checked without writing code, a done-for-you run fits. If you want practice, replay does.
Questions and answers
Do I need to code to backtest?
Not always. Platform testers such as TradingView’s Strategy Tester and NinjaTrader’s Strategy Analyzer run coded strategies. Replay tools and our done-for-you service need no code.
Is there free backtesting software for futures?
There are free options of different kinds. NinjaTrader says backtesting is free to use. TradingView has a free Basic plan. FX Replay has a free plan. Our backtest is $19 a version, and the Trade Lab replay is free. Each has limits, so read them.
What should a beginner check first?
The bar size, how orders are filled, how contract rolls are handled and whether costs are included.
Can I practise without risking money?
Yes. Replay and paper trading use history and no real order is placed. Our Trade Lab is free with a verified email.
