Explainer
Does NinjaTrader allow backtesting?
Yes. NinjaTrader says strategy backtesting is free to use, through its Strategy Analyzer, which runs coded NinjaScript strategies over historical data.
Updated
The short answer
Yes. NinjaTrader’s pricing page says the platform is always free to use for advanced charting, strategy backtesting and simulated trading, with no time limit and no funding required. This is as of October 2026, so check the vendor for anything current.
Backtesting happens in a tool called the Strategy Analyzer. You open it from the New menu in the Control Center. It runs historical analysis on automated strategies written in NinjaScript.
- Strategy Analyzer
- NinjaTrader’s tool for backtesting, optimizing and walk-forward testing a strategy over historical data.
- NinjaScript
- The code language NinjaTrader strategies are written in.
- Optimization
- Running a strategy many times with different settings to see how the results change.
- Market Replay
- A separate NinjaTrader feature that plays recorded market data back. It is not the same as the Strategy Analyzer.
What the Strategy Analyzer runs
The Strategy Analyzer runs NinjaScript-based strategies. NinjaTrader’s help guide lists what it offers:
- Backtesting a strategy.
- Optimizing a strategy.
- Walk forward optimization.
- Multi-objective optimization.
- Basket testing of several instruments.
- Monte Carlo simulation.
What you still have to bring
The analyzer tests a strategy. It does not write one for you. NinjaTrader’s walk-forward guide lists three requirements: access to historical data, a custom NinjaScript strategy, and a good understanding of how the Strategy Analyzer backtests and optimizes. Sample strategies come installed, so you can explore with those first.
That means the rules have to exist as code. If you write code, or someone writes it for you, the tool is free to use. If your rules are a paragraph in a notebook, the paragraph has to become a script before anything runs.
You also have to supply the cost assumptions and check how the tool fills orders. The help guide has pages on how historical fills are processed and on differences between real-time and backtest results. Read them before you trust a number.
A free backtest tool still needs coded rules, data and cost assumptions. Check each one before you read a result.
Backtesting is not replay
A backtest runs fixed rules over history all at once. Market Replay plays recorded data back so you can watch it. NinjaTrader’s pricing page lists Market Replay among the features that unlock after funding, so it is not part of the no-funding backtesting offer.
For the difference between the two ideas, see our explainer on backtesting, forward testing and replay.
Where a done-for-you service fits
We are a different kind of tool. You describe the rules in plain language, and we run them on CME futures history and send back every trade with the assumptions that were used. There is no code and no platform to install.
A version is $19. Turnaround is two to three business days. We do not offer live trading, and we do not tell you whether a strategy is worth trading.
